Futon Cover Sizing

Futon Cover SizingAll of the futon covers at Futonsandbeanbags.com fit standard-sized mattresses, though they may be standard sizes only in the USA!  Here are the mattress sizes that our futon covers typically accommodate.

Twin Size:   39" wide x 75" long    (some Twins are only 72" long)
Full Size:     54" wide x 75" long
Queen Size:  60" wide x 80" long

Futon Mattress and Cover Thickness

Standard futon covers fit mattresses from 6" to 8" thick.  The mattress thickness is generally given for each mattress that you find on our web site.

The Futonsandbeanbags.com futon mattress comparison page will give you a great deal of information all in one place (in a table that compares all of our mattresses) to help you understand more about futon mattresses and mattress sizing.   Just click here to see the table.

For a 6-inch thick futon mattress, your cover will fit slightly loosely. For an 8-inch thick futon mattress, your futon cover will fit snugly. You want it snug so it is not baggy, but not overly tight. Rest assured that the standard cover will be fine for mattresses that are between 6 inches and 8 inches thick.

What About Thicker Mattresses?

Some mattresses are thicker (typically, 9" and 10" thick).  The typical futon cover does NOT fit well on these. It will be too tight and put stress on the seams and zipper, so you really need to accommodate for the "extra loft" (thickness or height of the futon cover).

Some futon cover manufacturers make futon covers with additional loft for thicker mattresses. It is not terribly expensive (about $10-$15 extra) to go from a a 6”-8” inch futon cover to a 9" futon cover.

Luckily, you can easily purchase additional "loft" in many of our futon covers. When you open a product page, look for the manufacturer name in the upper left hand corner of the page. If you see SIS Covers or LS Covers, you can purchase thicker covers (more loft) for just a few dollars more. You might spend $10-$15 additional, but your futon cover will fit better and will last much longer.

Keeping Bedding on the Futon Mattress

Some people like to keep bedding on the mattress all the time, under the futon cover, particularly if they open and use the futon as a bed each night.  Sheets will always work, but if you want to keep a blanket on the futon bed, you may need a little additional loft to avoid having the zipped cover too tight. A little bit of extra loft will allow both sheets and a blanket underneath and will still zip nicely shut without bagginess or too tight a fit.

Caution #1: Several blankets or a down comforter may be too bulky even for a 9” thick loft and you have to add an additional inch of loft if you intend to keep more than one blanket on the futon when you zip it closed with multiple blankets inside the futon cover.

Caution #2:  It can be REALLY hard to find sheets and mattress protectors or mattress covers for a 10" thick mattress -- futon mattress or a regular mattress! You may be able to find them on the Internet with some searching, but they are not universally available. Though it is tempting to get as thick a mattress as possible (they can be extraordinarily comfortable), you will search longer and pay more. You will also have to buy additional loft in the sheets, mattress protectors, and futon cover.

Check the drop-down menus below the product picture to add additional loft, or check with our Customer Service Department to see if you can purchase additional loft for a specific fabric.
