Innerspring Futon Mattresses

Innerspring Futon MattressesInternal springs generally provide firmer support. Innerspring futon mattresses are constructed of steel coils springs on the inside, wrapped in cotton, foam, or a combination of both. Sometimes the coils inside the futon mattress are individually wrapped as well so they function independently of each other. The wire coils provide a counterforce to the weight of the body, holding it in alignment.

Coils and Coil Construction

Conventional wisdom held that the number of coils used inside the innerspring futon mattress determined the amount of support for the sleeper. However, the construction of the coils also makes a difference. Modern improvements in high-carbon steel coils make it possible to have fewer, well-constructed coils giving very comfortable and adequate support.

Innerspring futon mattresses using higher gauge (thinner) steel need to have more coils to provide adequate support. Beware of the mattress with higher-gauge coils and only 300 (the minimum) coils. You should probably avoid buying a full-size futon mattress with less than 300 coils, since this is generally considered too few to provide adequate support over time.

Innerspring futon mattresses that use heavier gauge (thicker) steel also need to have a sufficient number of coils to provide firm support. They need to have, for example, 400 or more in a full mattress to avoid an inevitable lumpiness that results from having too few coils.

Innerspring futon mattresses with more than 500 coils are usually considered “firm.”

Manufacturers also incorporate more turns of the coil to provide more spring and support. More turns of the coil make the mattress feel firmer. The coils should yield to gentle pressure but push back harder when they encounter more weight.

Whatever the gauge, the coils must be tempered with heat or electricity to make them more durable (able to spring back to their intended shape).

Additionally, the innerspring futon mattress’s coil system should provide the most support between the shoulders and knees, where most of the body’s weight occurs.

Manufacturers of innerspring futon mattresses gain additional softness by adding layers of cotton or foam on top of the coil system. The additional layers help shield the sleeper from feeling the coils.

There are many different kinds of innerspring futon mattresses available, and we offer ones that provide good sitting and sleeping support. Our Innerspring Futon Mattress is an 8” futon mattress made with 2 layers of specialty blend cotton batting, 4 layers of polyester batting, 1 layer of low-density slab foam, and 2 layers of high-density finger foam, all surrounding the internal coil support springs. In other words, there is plenty of softness built into the upholstery, but strong springs to provide firm support.
