Why Not King Size Futon Frames?

Futons are not practical in king size!

If you have ever seen a Queen Size Futon, you know that, when the futon is in the sofa position, the back of the mattress sits up taller than the back of the frame. The difference is only about 5" - 7", but to many people it looks odd. Most people buy full size futon frames for that reason.

Another reason that King Size is not practical for futons is the sheer weight of the frame and mattress. Both King size mattresses and frames are heavy!

For many futon frames, it takes two people to change a Queen size futon frame/mattress from sofa to bed and back. You must take care in the transition to move it gently from one position to the other; bouncing or banging a frame will wear out the long wood rails and hinges all too quickly.

Imagine how much heavier a king size frame and king size mattress would be and how much muscle power it would take to convert.

A final reason that King Size is not typically used for futons is frame construction itself. Changing a futon from futon sofa to futon sleeper relies on mechanical parts to support the weight of parts of the frame. King Size requires longer rails, longer slats between the rails, and sturdier metal parts.

Manufacturers feel that the risk of damage is too great to offer them.

Furthermore, the cost of shipping would be much greater. Queen Size futons are already at the Fed Ex and UPS size limits for cartons. King Size parts would have to be shipped by common carrier trucking companies at much greater cost, which is factored into the price.

If you're buying a futon frame, stick with a Queen or Full.

Platform beds are a much smarter purchase when you require a King Size bed.
