An inexpensive alternative to a tri-fold futon mattress is a split futon mattress—a futon mattress that literally comes in two pieces. There is a “double”-size piece that forms the futon couch seat and back, and a second, separate section--about ½ of the size of the larger futon mattress piece--that can be stored behind or under the futon couch when not in use). The second, smaller piece is used at night to extend the length of the futon bed for sleeping.

The actual frame of the futon bed consists of a fold-down couch section and a separated, smaller section. Sometimes the small section doubles as a coffee table that you can slide together with the couch section for use as a futon bed. Sometimes the small section slides out from underneath the futon couch where it is stored.

We’re sorry that we do not carry split futon frames or split futon mattresses. If you already have a split futon, though, we can custom order a futon cover for a split mattress – that is, a cover that also comes in two pieces.

The additional cost is very small (actually surprisingly small), and is made to order for your size of mattress sections in any material! All that you need are the measurements of both sections of your futon mattress – the length, width, and height of your mattress pieces.
