Many
consumers have the idea that if they can find a “wholesale”
price they will have found a bargain. The truth is that “wholesale”
refers to the price charged by a manufacturer, or other supplier,
to buyers who are going to resell the merchandise to the public.
What are true wholesale prices?
To be able to pay a true wholesale price, the retail seller must
demonstrate to the manufacturer that it is, in fact, reselling the
merchandise. To do this, the retail seller must submit to the manufacturer
or supplier a copy of its state-issued reseller’s license
and its city- or county-issued business license.
The purpose of having to submit these documents is to assure the
manufacturer that only verified resellers are receiving a true wholesale
price. Otherwise, consumers could purchase directly from a manufacturer
or supplier, bypassing the retail seller.
Once word got out that this was happening, retail sellers would
see this as direct competition from the manufacture or supplier
and would stop selling the product. This would be a larger loss
to the manufacturer than the one direct sale to the consumer.
A good example is the consumer’s inability to buy a car directly
from Ford, Toyota, GM, or any other automaker. If we could buy directly
from the manufacturer, it would undermine the local dealers who
generate the vast bulk of the sales.
