Wood Futons

Nothing beats the quality found in hard wood futons. Trees have provided the materials for many different types of habitations, creature comforts and objects all with no objections or disrespect. They clean our air and ensure a livable habitat, but are being destroyed at an alarming rate for less than productive purposes. For years trees have been harvested to create everything from lumber to paper. We rely on them for our homes and our livelihood and slowly we are learning how to harvest trees sustainably and allow new growth to occur.

For thousands of years we have interacted with wood and it was essential for our discovery of tools and how to change things with work. First it was discovered that it burns really well providing warmth during the coldest hours. Then it was realized that the wood could be worked and carved into useable devices such as spears, arrows, and other utensils. A few modifications allowed the wood to be crafted into stable structures that provided excellent shelter, and then could be used to make those structures more comfortable inside. For thousands of years it was the most important building material known to man.

Throughout the bronze, iron, and industrial ages wood has proved itself as one of the most useful and beautiful materials for a variety of applications. The warmth of wood is unrivalled in any other material and it shows when comparing furniture such as wood futons with metal futons. Even though the metal may be stronger in some cases (often it is not) the beauty of the wood will prevail and if it is a strong hardwood it can rival many steel, iron or aluminum frames at a comparable cost.

Sustainability is much more important for wood and trees than it is for metals which can be easily recycled and molded into new forms. Although wood can be ground down to sawdust and combined with resins to create new forms it is more often discarded and new wood logged and cut into usable forms, an incredibly destructive process that greatly affects the environment. But there are many sustainable hardwoods and logging practices that allow these beautiful life giving plants to still provide excellent shelter, furniture such as wood futons and objects such as guitars and other musical instruments.

It is important to know where your wood is coming from if you want to support sustainable practices. This is the only way we can continue to produce at the rate we are growing. No one wants to live in a desert with no trees, and it can easily be prevented.
